3rd Water JPI Conference Excursions
on November 18, 2021
Excursion 1:
The wastewater experimental station at the Emschermündung wastewater treatment plant
The experimental station “TECHNIKUM” was constructed in 1963 on the site of the Emscher mouth wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that was planned here close to the Rhine. In the first few years, semi- and large industrial-scale studies were carried out on the design of the new large WWTP of the Emschergenossenschaft. In the 1970s and 1980s the focus was then on optimising the treatment technology of this plant and undertaking studies for the expansion of the WWTPs of the Lippeverband. In the early 1990s the TECHNIKUM was extended once more in order to realise industrial-scale investigations for the construction of the new Bottrop WWTP.
Excursion 2:
The Water Treatment Process at RWW Rheinisch-Westfälische Wasserwerksgesellschaft mbH
RWW offers tours through the Ruhr waterworks Mülheim-Styrum/ Ost to experience how the pumping and treatment of drinking water is done: In the 1970s, the Mülheim process was developed to use a predominantly biological form of treatment, which replaced the previously common chlorine disinfection by ozonation and activated carbon filters This multi-barrier system is now recognized worldwide.
